eのついた名前
最近見た2本の映画に偶然どちらも、人の名前の綴りを説明する場面が出てきて、そこでeの有無が言及されていました。
ひとつは、『ファミリー・ツリー』(Descendants)で、"Speer with two Es." (eを重ねるスピア)という台詞。もうひとつは、『幸せの教室』(Larry Crowne)で、"Crowne with an E" (eのついたクラウン)という台詞。
英語の綴りと発音は対応が不規則でいろいろと悩ましいですが、特に固有名詞は多様で、予測しにくいですね。
ところで、名前と
「アンという名を呼ぶんでしたら、e のついたつづりのアンで呼んでください」
「字なんかどんなふうにつづったって、たいしたちがいはないじゃないの?」さびついたような微笑がふたたびマリラの顔へ出てきた。
