「おぞましい」の原文はなんだったのか？
オバマ大統領の訪韓で、朴槿恵大統領との共同記者会見で、従軍慰安婦問題について「おぞましい」人権侵害だと言及した、というネットニュースが24日夜流れました。「おぞましい」の原文が何なのかきになりました。horrendousくらいかな？とおもいましたが、いくつか出てきた英文ニュースサイトは、"terrible"がひっかかっただけでした。
今朝、ホワイトハウスのウェブサイトで、共同会見の全文を読みました。どうやら、オバマ大統領は、最初、"a terrible, egregious violation of human rights"といい、もう一度、"those women were violated in ways, even in the midst of war, was shocking"と言ったようです。
terribleだけであれば「おぞましい」は行き過ぎでは？と思いましたが、terrible, egregious, shockingとここまで言葉が重ねてあると、第一報の「おぞましい」もありかな、と思うにいたりました。terribleやshockingは日常口語でよく使う語ですが、egregious（イグリージアス）となるとそうでもなくて、ここでぐっと強度が増すかんじがします。語源的にもラテン語由来の語で、フォーマルな感じもします。（terribleもラテン語系ですが、こちらは口語でよく使うので）。
外交、歴史問題としてではなく、と英語研究者としての、引用（直接引用、間接引用）の事例として興味深かったので、その観点から感じたことを書いてみました。
