Ｗ．Ｄ．ホイットニーについて短い論文を書いています。スティーブン・Ｇ・アルター(Stephen G. Alter)の言語学史的評伝『ウィリアム・ドワイト・ホイットニーと言語科学』（William Dwight Whitney and the Science of Language,2005)を、数年前に読んで以来気になっていたので。

アルターの研究は、『ダーウィニズムと言語のイメージ』(Darwinism and the Linguistic Image, 1999)が本当におもしろいと思いました。19世紀の比較言語学の言語系統樹とダーウィンの進化論の関連を論じたもの。来年度の言語思想史講義に何らかの方法で使えないか、と思いながらぱらぱらと読み返しています。
